Instead of a night in a club
Rather than spending €1,000 or €2,000 on clubs and nights out to impress someone, take her (or him) to Kuala Lumpur, then Bali: a drink facing the lit-up Petronas Towers, terraced rice fields, a sunset over the Indian Ocean. Patong and Bangla Road are loud at night, but the west-coast sunsets, the islands, the beach clubs of Kata Noi, Kamala and Bang Tao and the Old Town are made for two. Base yourselves away from the busiest strip and time your outings around sunset.
Somewhere simple that lets you talk: sunset at Promthep, then the Sunday market in the Old Town (Lard Yai, from 4 pm), or a drink at FIRA above Kata Noi. The answer is the same if she's taking you, or if you're taking a guy out: good scenery, not too loud, and easy to stretch into a longer evening if it's going well.
